As the 2024-25 school year draws to a close, it’s time to pause and recognize a group of women who have poured their hearts, talent, and relentless determination into every beat, every performance, and every competition. The Southern Misses Dance Team, under the steadfast leadership of head coach Ashlynn Fuqua, has not only represented the University of Southern Mississippi with elegance and energy – they have left a lasting mark on every stage and sideline they’ve graced.

Throughout the year, the Southern Misses have been a vibrant presence at all home football games, all home volleyball games, and every home Men’s and Women’s basketball games. Rain or shine, win or lose, they showed up – not just as performers, but as passionate ambassadors of school spirit. Their presence ignited the crowd, created moments of unity, and turned every game day into an unforgettable experience.
Behind the scenes, their story is one of tireless commitment, Early mornings, late nights, countless hours in the studio – all fueled by a shared love for dance and for each other. It’s easy to cheer for what we see on the sidelines, but what’s often unseen is the perseverance, the discipline, and the heart that drives this team to excellence. These dancers are students, leaders, and artists – balancing academics, rehearsals, and performances with grace, all while upholding the legacy of the program.

This April, that hard work culminated on the national stage at The College Classic, held on April 12th and 13th. There, the Southern Misses stunned the competition and soared to 1st place in D1A Hip Hop and 5th place in D1A Pom – a testament to their grit, creativity, and unity. These accolades are not just numbers on a scoreboard; they are the result of months of sweat, sacrifice, and soul. To earn top honors in such a competitive division is no small feat – it speaks volumes about their dedication, coaching, and trust in one another.
The Hip Hop performance was a powerful display of precision and passion – one that commanded the stage and left an undeniable impact on everyone watching. It was a routine that told a story, showcased strength, and celebrated individuality while moving together as one. Meanwhile, their Pom performance brought the energy and athleticism Southern Miss fans know and love – sharp motions, seamless transitions, and contagious school pride that radiated through every motion.

Beyond the scores and trophies, the Southern Misses embody what it means to lead with heart. They’ve spent the year uplifting others – through community involvement, team traditions, and simply being role models for younger dancers who dream of wearing the same black and gold. Their spirit is bigger than the spotlight; it lives in every pep talk, every shared laugh on the bus, and every quiet moment of encouragement during tough practices.

Coach Ashlynn has been the guiding force behind this incredible year. With a vision rooted in both excellence and care, she has not only cultivated a winning team but also fostered a sisterhood. Her leadership has inspired a culture of respect, resilience, and radiance that radiates far beyond the dance floor. Her investment in each dancer – as performers and as people – is what makes this team truly extraordinary.

To the Southern Misses: thank you for showing us what it looks like to chase greatness with grace. Your passion lights up every performance, your energy uplifts every crowd, and your victories – both seen and unseen – make us all proud to say To The Top. As you close out this unforgettable season, know that your legacy continues to ripple throughout campus, our community, and the hearts of everyone lucky enough to witness your magic.
Here’s to the memories you’ve made, the barriers you’ve broken, and the future you’ve inspired – one count at a time.
